Across the United States, certain recipients of Social Security benefits are scheduled to get September’s monthly payment later this week.
On Thursday, September 3, Social Security benefits are due to be issued to two groups of recipients, as the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) embarks on this month’s distribution timeline for the program.

September’s Social Security benefits are to be paid out to beneficiaries who started receiving their monthly payments before May 1997.
- Double beneficiaries: Social Security + SSI
Thursday 3 is also this month’s Social Security distribution date for recipients who simultaneously claim Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
A program for certain low-income Americans, SSI differs from the Social Security scheme as it is needs-based. A claimant’s eligibility for SSI payments is not dependent on their work history.
Worth an average of $736.54 a month, per the SSA’s latest figures, SSI is to be sent out for September on Tuesday 1.

What other Social Security payment runs does September include?
Of the 71 million recipients of Social Security in the U.S., most will be paid their September benefits on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in the month, depending on their birthday:
- Born on 1st-10th of month: benefits paid out on Wednesday, September 9
- Born on 11th-20th of month: benefits paid out on Wednesday, September 16
- Born on 21st-31st of month: benefits paid out on Wednesday, September 23
NB: If you get Social Security benefits based on someone else’s employment record, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.
How does the Social Security Admin pay benefits?
Social Security recipients can update their bank details on the SSA’s online “my Social Security” portal.
Benefits can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a debit card for federal disbursements. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
