Nigeria’s latest push for assistive technology is welcome, but it also exposes a more uncomfortable truth. The country does not only need clever new apps for persons with disabilities. It needs banks, telecoms companies, government portals, fintechs and public-service platforms to stop being inaccessible in the first place.

The Nigerian Communications Commission recently used its Hackathon Live Show in Abuja to challenge young innovators to build technology that removes barriers for persons with disabilities. The theme was Technology Without Barriers, and the showcased ideas included AI-powered speech-to-text tools, sign-language translation, voice-enabled complaint systems, accessible USSD services and inclusive mobile applications.

That is useful work. Nigeria needs local assistive technology because imported solutions are often expensive, poorly localized or designed for markets with better devices, stronger connectivity and different language realities. A tool built for Lagos, Kano, Aba, Ibadan or Port Harcourt has to understand low bandwidth, shared devices, USSD habits, noisy environments, local languages and affordability.

But the bigger failure is structural. Too many Nigerian digital platforms still behave as if every user can see clearly, type easily, hear audio, read small text, understand English perfectly, afford constant data and navigate complex app flows without help. That assumption excludes millions of people before innovation even begins.

The Guardian reports that NCC’s leadership cited barriers such as high device costs, platforms designed without accessibility in mind, digital-skills gaps and the limited availability of affordable assistive technologies. Vanguard also reported that NCC wants solutions that can work in low-bandwidth and offline environments, which is exactly the right standard for Nigeria.

The financial sector is one of the sharpest examples. ATMs without useful audio guidance, banking apps that do not work well with screen readers, customer-support channels that assume voice calls, and branch processes that force visually impaired users to depend on strangers all weaken privacy and financial independence. Digital Public Infrastructure Africa has documented how Nigerian banking still leaves many persons with disabilities behind.

    Also worth reading

This is where regulators need to move beyond encouragement. Hackathons can produce ideas, but they cannot replace enforceable accessibility standards. If banks, fintechs, telcos and government agencies are allowed to launch digital services without accessibility testing, then assistive startups are being asked to fix exclusion after the fact.

Accessibility should be treated like cybersecurity or data protection. A digital bank should not launch without basic security checks. A public platform should not launch without privacy controls. In the same way, essential digital services should not launch without screen-reader compatibility, keyboard navigation, readable layouts, clear language, voice alternatives and accessible support channels.

There is also a commercial argument. Persons with disabilities are customers, workers, students, entrepreneurs and voters. Excluding them from digital services is not charity failure alone; it is market failure. It reduces participation in e-commerce, payments, education, healthcare, government services and remote work.

Nigeria has made progress in building digital services quickly. The next test is whether those services are humane enough to include people who do not fit the default user profile. That includes persons with visual, hearing, mobility, cognitive and speech-related disabilities, but it also includes elderly users, low-literacy users and people in rural areas.

The NCC is right to push innovators toward assistive technology. But Nigeria should not outsource inclusion only to startups. The platforms that already dominate banking, telecoms, identity, education and government services must be made accessible by design. Otherwise, every hackathon becomes a beautiful patch over a system that keeps excluding people.
