AS WORKPLACES evolve in response to new economic, technological and social challenges, investing in people’s safety and mental well-being is no longer optional but fundamental to building resilient organisations, strengthening workforce sustainability and enhancing national competitiveness.

Hence, the Alliance for a Safe Community (Ikatan) and Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM) Institute have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Kuala Lumpur to collaborate on initiatives promoting occupational safety, mental well-being and psychosocial safety in the workplace.

It brings together Ikatan’s expertise in community safety, workplace mental health and advocacy with FMM Institute’s extensive industry network and training capabilities.

Both organisations will develop and deliver programmes that equip employers and employees with the knowledge and practical skills to foster safer, healthier and more resilient workplaces.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ikatan chairman and founder Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye stressed that mental health remained one of the most pressing yet often overlooked workplace issues.

“Mental health is no longer just a personal issue – it is a workplace issue.

“Stress, anxiety, depression, burnout and other psychosocial risks affect employees across all levels of an organisation.

“It is time to recognise that protecting mental health is a shared responsibility.”

Lee emphasised that employers must view mental health and psychosocial safety as integral components of occupational safety and health (OSH), rather than as optional employee welfare initiatives.

He noted that organisations that invest in safe, healthy and inclusive work environments would be better positioned to reduce absenteeism, enhance productivity and performance, improve employee morale and engagement, and minimise workplace conflicts.

Meanwhile, FMM Institute chairman Datuk Nathan K. Suppiah said organisations could not achieve sustainable business success without placing equal importance on the well-being of their workforce.

“While organisations understandably focus on productivity, performance and profitability, these goals cannot be achieved without giving equal consideration to the well-being of the people who make them possible.”

Both organisations stated that the collaboration reflected their shared commitment to help Malaysian businesses create workplaces where people would feel safe, supported and empowered to perform at their best.
