Social Security recipients won’t learn their official 2027 cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA, until October.
But new forecasts released after recent inflation data are giving retirees an early glimpse of what next year’s increase could look like, and the latest projections suggest it may exceed the 2.8% boost beneficiaries received in 2026.

For millions of Americans who rely on Social Security, even a small change in the annual COLA can affect monthly budgets, household spending and retirement planning. That’s one reason searches for terms such as “2027 Social Security COLA estimate,” “2027 COLA forecast” and “how much will Social Security increase in 2027” have surged as new projections emerge ahead of the official announcement.
The Social Security Administration won’t determine the final COLA until inflation data from July, August and September are fully available. But several of the most closely watched forecasts are now pointing to a benefit increase that could be larger than this year’s adjustment.
What is the latest 2027 Social Security COLA estimate?
Several recent forecasts place the 2027 COLA in the mid-3% range.
Independent Social Security analyst Mary Johnson recently estimated a 3.4% COLA, while advocacy group The Senior Citizens League projects a 3.6% increase. Other projections generally range between about 3.2% and 3.6%, depending on assumptions about inflation during the next two months.
Those estimates remain unofficial and could change as additional inflation reports are released.
How much could Social Security checks increase in 2027?
The average monthly Social Security retirement benefit was about $2,086 as of July 2026. Based on current projections, beneficiaries could see monthly increases noticeably larger than the increase received this year.
Using current estimates:
A 3.4% COLA would increase the average benefit by roughly $71 per month.
A 3.6% COLA would increase the average benefit by roughly $75 per month.
Actual benefit increases will vary depending on a recipient’s current monthly payment.
Why are 2027 COLA estimates getting attention now?
The latest forecasts follow fresh inflation data released in August.
Because Social Security COLAs are based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, known as CPI-W, analysts closely track inflation reports during July, August and September. Those months ultimately determine the following year’s adjustment.
While inflation has cooled from some recent highs, it remains elevated enough that analysts still expect next year’s COLA to exceed the 2.8% increase beneficiaries received in January 2026.
That combination of new inflation data and updated forecasts has helped drive renewed interest in the 2027 COLA outlook.
When will the official 2027 Social Security COLA be announced?
The Social Security Administration is expected to announce the official 2027 COLA on Oct. 14, 2026.
Until then, retirees will be watching upcoming inflation reports for clues about whether the projected increase moves higher or lower.
For now, most forecasts suggest beneficiaries could receive a larger cost-of-living adjustment than they got in 2026, though the final figure won’t be known until the government completes its annual calculation this fall.
