For years, India’s intimate wellness market remained hidden
behind social stigma, limited awareness, and poor accessibility. Products were
difficult to find, consumers hesitated to purchase them, and conversations
around sexual wellness rarely entered the mainstream.
Today, the category is undergoing a significant
transformation.
What was once a niche market has steadily evolved into a
broader wellness segment, driven by changing consumer attitudes, increasing
digital commerce, and the entry of both specialist startups and established
personal care brands.
The Early Challenge: Access Before Awareness
Around a decade ago, buying intimate wellness products in
India was far from convenient. Most products were imported, delivery timelines
often stretched beyond a month, prices were significantly higher due to
imports, and customers frequently had to pay in advance without any assurance
of smooth delivery.
Several early players in the industry focused first on
solving these logistical barriers rather than simply introducing new products.
Building local inventory, offering faster domestic deliveries, and introducing
Cash on Delivery helped establish greater consumer confidence in purchasing
products that were still unfamiliar to many Indians.
“The biggest problem was not whether people wanted
these products. It was whether they trusted the process of buying them. Once we
solved availability, delivery and COD, we started seeing that trust built in
the category,” says Sukhvir Singh, Founder, NaughtyNights.
Industry observers note that improving accessibility laid
the foundation for wider acceptance of the category.
A Shift from Adult Products to Wellness
As the industry evolved, so did the way brands approached
the category.
Rather than positioning intimate wellness products solely as
adult products, companies began reframing them around wellness, comfort,
self-care, and healthy relationships. This shift reflected a broader change in
consumer expectations, with buyers increasingly looking for products that
support overall well-being rather than carrying the stigma traditionally
associated with the category.
Brands such as Calmras
have contributed to this transition by expanding their portfolio beyond
massagers into wellness-focused products like lubricants, while established
players such as Durex have broadened their offerings beyond condoms, signalling
the category’s growing mainstream acceptance. The emphasis today is less on the
product itself and more on the role it plays in enhancing comfort, confidence,
and intimate health.
“We look at these products from the point of view of
the problem they solve. With a lubricant, the purpose is comfort and ease. That
is why we believe consumers need to understand the product, not just see it
advertised,” says Vishal Kedia, Founder, Calmras.
As a result, conversations around intimate wellness are
gradually moving away from taboo and becoming part of the larger dialogue
around holistic health and personal well-being.
Education Remains the Biggest Opportunity
Despite growing acceptance, awareness remains uneven.
Unlike skincare or beauty products, intimate wellness
products often require education before purchase. Consumers need to understand
what products are designed for, when they are useful, and how they contribute
to overall wellbeing.
However, educating consumers continues to be one of the
industry’s biggest challenges.
Digital advertising restrictions on platforms such as Meta
often limit how brands communicate product benefits, forcing companies to rely
more heavily on content marketing, influencer collaborations, expert
conversations, and educational campaigns.
For many brands, awareness-building has become just as
important as product development.
Quick Commerce is Changing Consumer Behaviour
Distribution has undergone one of the biggest
transformations in recent years.
While specialist websites initially dominated the category,
today’s consumers increasingly purchase intimate wellness products through
quick-commerce platforms such as Blinkit, Zepto, and Swiggy Instamart.
The shift reflects changing buying behaviour. Consumers can
now purchase these products alongside everyday essentials, making the
experience more convenient and discreet.
Industry experts believe that wider availability through
mainstream commerce platforms has played an important role in normalising the
category.
Indian Consumer Trends Are Also Evolving
Interestingly, India’s intimate wellness market is
developing its own seasonal consumption patterns.
While Valentine’s Day remains important, brands increasingly
observe stronger engagement during festivals such as Karwa Chauth, when
grooming, relationships, and couple-centric celebrations receive greater
attention.
This reflects a broader shift in consumer behaviour, where
intimate wellness is becoming part of relationship wellness rather than being
confined to a single annual occasion.
The Road Ahead
India’s intimate wellness industry has moved through
multiple phases – from improving access and building trust to expanding product
innovation and increasing mainstream availability.
Early category builders such as NaughtyNights helped address
accessibility challenges at a time when purchasing these products was
difficult. Newer brands, including Calmras, have focused on expanding
wellness-focused product categories and encouraging more open conversations
around intimacy. Alongside them, companies such as MyMuse, IMbesharam, Durex,
and several emerging startups continue to contribute to the sector’s growth.
As consumer attitudes continue to evolve, the industry’s
next phase will depend less on product availability and more on education,
responsible communication, and creating an environment where conversations
around intimate wellness become as normal as discussions around any other
aspect of personal health.
