Social Security recipients now have a clearer idea of what their 2027 cost of living adjustment could look like, and the latest inflation data has pushed forecasts slightly lower.

The Senior Citizens League now estimates the 2027 COLA at 3.6%, down from its previous 3.8% projection. AARP has also reduced its forecast, moving from 3.6% to 3.5%.

Those revisions followed July’s Consumer Price Index report, which showed annual inflation cooling to 3.4% from 3.5% in June.

Although the forecasts have fallen, a COLA between 3.5% and 3.6% would still be the largest Social Security increase since 2023.

What would a 3.6% Social Security COLA mean?

The average retired worker was receiving about $2,071 per month in Social Security benefits as of January.

A 3.6% adjustment would add roughly $75 to that monthly payment, bringing the average benefit to around $2,146 at the start of 2027.

That figure remains only an estimate. The Social Security Administration calculates the COLA using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers during the third quarter of the year.

July is therefore only the first piece of the calculation. Inflation readings from August and September will also determine the final number.

Official 2027 COLA won’t arrive until October

The official 2027 adjustment is expected to be announced on October 14, after September’s inflation figures are released.

Until then, projections could move again if inflation accelerates or cools significantly over the next two months.

The lower forecast may disappoint retirees already struggling with higher living costs. The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, and some senior advocacy groups argue that benefit increases often lag behind the prices recipients are actually paying.

“Seniors don’t experience inflation as a percentage on a chart,” Senior Citizens League Executive Director Shannon Benton said. “Frankly, it’s infuriating that seniors must wait for a COLA to catch up with prices that have already driven up their grocery bills, housing costs, healthcare expenses and insurance premiums.”

The latest figures therefore offer only a snapshot rather than a final answer.

Right now, beneficiaries are looking at an estimated 3.5% to 3.6% increase for 2027, but two more months of inflation data will decide what ultimately lands in Social Security checks.
