Social Security recipients could receive a larger cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, with new projections estimating a 3.8% increase as inflation continues to affect retirees and renewed concerns emerge over the program’s long-term funding.

The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), a nonprofit advocacy group for older Americans, has projected that the Social Security COLA for 2027 will reach 3.8%, up from the 2.8% adjustment issued the previous year. While the official cost-of-living adjustment will not be announced by the Social Security Administration until mid-October, TSCL updates its estimates monthly based on inflation and economic data.

According to TSCL, if the projected 3.8% increase were applied today, the average monthly Social Security benefit would increase by $73.62, rising from $1,937.53 to approximately $2,011.15. The projected adjustment would rank as the 17th-largest annual COLA since automatic inflation adjustments began in 1977.

The Social Security Administration calculates annual COLAs using the average Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) during July, August and September. TSCL’s projections also factor in the Consumer Price Index, Federal Reserve interest rates and the national unemployment rate to estimate future benefit increases.

The higher projected adjustment reflects persistent inflation that continues to increase the cost of housing, healthcare, food and other essentials for millions of retirees. Annual COLAs are intended to help Social Security recipients maintain their purchasing power as consumer prices rise.

The latest projection also arrives as policymakers face growing concerns about the long-term financial health of Social Security. Current estimates indicate that the program’s retirement trust fund could face a funding shortfall by 2032, one year earlier than previous forecasts. Without congressional action, beneficiaries could face an automatic 17% reduction in payments once the trust fund reserves are depleted.

“The numbers should be a wake-up call. Congress needs to act,” said AARP Chief Executive Officer Myechia Minter-Jordan, urging lawmakers to strengthen the program’s long-term finances.

TSCL Executive Director Shannon Benton also warned that financial pressures on older Americans continue to grow. “The reality is that poverty is increasing rapidly among American seniors, who make up the fastest-growing portion of the homeless population,” Benton said.

Minter-Jordan added that Americans have contributed to Social Security throughout their working lives and should be able to rely on the benefits they have earned. She said no family should experience reductions in retirement benefits because of funding challenges.

Lawmakers have introduced proposals to strengthen Social Security, including legislation by Representative John Larson that would increase benefits by 2%, establish a higher minimum benefit tied to the federal poverty level, and calculate future COLAs using the Consumer Price Index for the Elderly (CPI-E) instead of CPI-W. The proposal would also expand Social Security payroll taxes to include annual income above $400,000. However, the legislation currently faces long odds of becoming law.

Here is the question this projection raises. The Social Security COLA for 2027 is expected to provide larger monthly payments as inflation remains elevated, but the program’s long-term funding challenges continue to deepen. Can higher benefits today be sustained without significant reforms tomorrow?

As debate over Social Security continues, The Silicon Review asks a final question. With millions of Americans depending on retirement benefits, will policymakers reach bipartisan agreement to secure Social Security’s future before funding pressures force difficult decisions?
