Children often do not know how to express the pressures they are experiencing, and many lack awareness about the importance of protecting their mental health.

Kasaragod, Kerala: The suicide rate among young people aged 10 to 25 years in Kerala is rising at an alarming rate, with experts pointing to a range of factors, from academic pressure to strained personal relationships.

The anxiety following the cancellation of the NEET examination has also been linked to a suicide in the state.

According to official data, 86 people in the 10–25 age group died by suicide between January and June 2026. More than 25 suicide attempts were also reported during the same period. On average, this translates to 14 suicides and two suicide attempts every month.

Kasaragod recorded eight suicides in this age group this year alone, although unofficial estimates suggest the actual number could be higher. Southern districts continue to report the highest numbers of suicides and attempts. Thiruvananthapuram recorded 10 suicides and three suicide attempts during the period.

Mental health experts say the reasons behind many of these deaths often remain unclear. They cite factors ranging from emotional distance within families to overt and subtle societal pressures. A lack of awareness about managing stress and weakening emotional bonds with parents and other adults are also seen as major contributors.

Police officers investigating such cases say unhealthy romantic relationships are among the leading causes of suicides in this age group. Distrust, emotional manipulation, threats, exploitation and academic stress are frequently involved. They also note that many of these deaths result from impulsive decisions made in moments of emotional distress.

The officials further observe that many of the children and young adults who die by suicide often lack healthy friendships or strong family relationships.

‘They don’t know how to speak up; there’s no one to listen’

Children often do not know how to express the pressures they are experiencing, and many lack awareness about the importance of protecting their mental health. They are also vulnerable to people who exploit their emotional insecurity.

“The belief that there is no one who will listen without judgment often pushes children into unhealthy relationships and, ultimately, to believe that suicide is the only solution to their problems,” said Dr Arun Sadasivan, Psychosocial Consultant and Psychiatric Social Worker at the Royal Borough of Greenwich, UK.

He stressed that awareness about mental health should begin at the school level. Parents should also strive to create a healthy and supportive environment at home and should not hesitate to seek professional help, including counselling and therapy, whenever necessary.

If you or someone you know is struggling, remember that help is available. Suicide is never the answer. In Kerala, you can contact the DISHA helpline at 1056 or 0471-2552056 for immediate support.
