PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Registration is live for the annual Whitney’s Walk for Suicide Prevention and Awareness.

It’s the 23rd year of the event that was started for community healing and fundraising for local mental health education.

Matt Collins, the project director of the Children’s Mental Health Initiative at Carle Health, stopped by WMBD This Morning to invite everyone to the event.

“This started in 2004, for Whitney, and really carries on her legacy, and the legacy of the Brimfield community, and it’s brought together the greater Peoria region for mental health awareness and suicide prevention,” he said.

The walk has raised nearly two million dollars since it started.

“All of the money, we’re really proud to say, stays local to the community. The needs of our community are large when it comes to mental health,” he added.

“You can register at Carle.org, or by checking out social media pages at Carle Health Greater Peoria, or Carle Health Center for philanthropy,” he said.

Registration is also open on-site before the walk, which begins at 7:55 a.m. on July 25, at the Jubilee College State Park in Brimfield, 13921 W. Route 150.

“Adults, children, and pets are welcome,” he added.
