An Andover woman has made history after successfully completing a world-first trek across the entire length of Europe in aid of suicide prevention.

After almost a year on the road, Kit Birks reached the finish line of her extraordinary Stride Beyond Silence challenge on Sunday, completing a solo journey from Nordkapp in Norway to the Greek island of Gavdos – Europe’s northernmost to southernmost points.

The challenge saw Kit walk approximately 5,000 miles (8,000km) through ten countries, carrying everything she needed on her back while raising awareness of mental health and suicide prevention.

Announcing her achievement on social media, Kit described the moment as overwhelming.

“That’s it, I’ve just completed a world first mission all in the name of suicide prevention,” she wrote.

“I have no words, I have no idea how to feel but what I do know is that… I DID IT!”

The expedition is believed to be the first continuous solo trek of its kind, with Kit spending nearly a year navigating Arctic wilderness, mountain ranges, forests and coastal trails on foot.

The challenge was inspired by her own experiences with mental illness, addiction and recovery. Before setting out, Kit spoke openly about her battles with depression, eating disorders and substance misuse, as well as her determination to use her story to help others who may be struggling.

Throughout the journey, she carried a memorial flag bearing the names of people lost to suicide and shared daily updates with supporters around the world.

Her mission was simple but powerful: to create as much noise as possible around suicide prevention and encourage people to seek support when they need it.

Reflecting on the achievement, Kit thanked everyone who had supported the challenge over the past year.

“Stride Beyond Silence aimed to make as much noise as possible for suicide prevention and mental illness and I want to thank each and every person that made that possible,” she said.

The challenge has captured the attention of thousands of followers across social media and has raised more than £65,000 for suicide prevention charities, with donations continuing to come in as Kit works towards her £100,000 fundraising target.

Funds raised will support two charities close to her heart: James’ Place, which provides life-saving treatment to men experiencing mental health crises, and CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably), which offers support and suicide prevention services across the UK.

Kit also paid tribute to the organisations and sponsors that helped make the challenge possible, including Givestar, Peak Dynamics, Montane and 360 ADHD.

While the physical journey may now be over, the message behind Stride Beyond Silence remains unchanged.

Over the course of nearly 5,000 miles, Kit’s story has become one of resilience, hope and recovery – proof that even the darkest chapters can lead to something extraordinary.

For a woman who once struggled to see a future, reaching the southernmost point of Europe is more than a world-first achievement. It is a powerful reminder that help is available, recovery is possible and that, as Kit has often said throughout her journey, “it gets beautiful again.”

Donations can still be made through Kit’s fundraising page as she continues her mission to raise awareness and vital funds for suicide prevention.
