When Are May 2026 Social Security Payments Coming?

Social Security benefits will continue to be issued on their regular schedule throughout April, but the exact timing depends on when recipients qualify for payment.

More than 70 million Americans depend on Social Security each month as a primary source of income, including retirees, people with disabilities and surviving family members.

    Payment Dates

To manage the large number of beneficiaries, the Social Security Administration (SSA) staggers payments across the month rather than issuing them all at once.

For most recipients, payment dates are determined by their date of birth, though some groups follow a different timetable. Those who began receiving retirement, spousal or survivor benefits before May 1997, as well as individuals who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), are paid on separate dates.

    Payment dates for May:

    • Friday, May 1: SSI recipients and those who receive both SSI and Social Security
    • Wednesday, May 13: Birth dates between the 1st and 10th
    • Wednesday, May 20: Birth dates between the 11th and 20th
    • Wednesday, May 27: Birth dates between the 21st and 31st

    Types of Social Security Benefits

The SSA oversees several key federal programs that provide financial support to retirees, individuals with disabilities, survivors of deceased workers and people with limited income.

Retirement benefits are paid to workers who contributed through payroll taxes and accumulated sufficient work credits—typically the equivalent of about 10 years of employment. Certain relatives, including spouses, former spouses and children, may also qualify for payments based on a worker’s earnings record.

Survivor benefits are available to eligible family members—such as widows, widowers, children, and in some cases dependent parents—following the death of a worker who paid into the system.

The agency also administers disability and income-based programs, mainly Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI. SSDI provides benefits to workers unable to continue employment due to a qualifying disability expected to last at least a year or result in death. SSI supports older adults, blind individuals and people with disabilities who have limited income and resources.

    How Much Is Social Security?

Monthly retirement payments vary based on lifetime earnings, the age at which benefits are claimed and the year payments begin, meaning there is no universal maximum benefit.

For example, someone who consistently earned the taxable maximum from age 22 and began claiming in 2026 would receive $4,152 per month at full retirement age. Claiming earlier at 62 would reduce that figure to $2,969, while delaying benefits until age 70 would increase it to $5,181 per month.

As of February 2026, the average monthly retirement benefit stood at $2,021.77
