The first wave of April’s Social Security payments is being sent out this week to millions of older Americans.

For the nearly 71 million Americans who receive Social Security and the 7.4 million who receive Supplemental Security Income, the Social Security Administration’s April payments will follow a normal schedule.

In March, SSI beneficiaries didn’t receive their check on March 1 because the day fell on a weekend, meaning they received their March deposit early at the end of February.

However, April is back on track with a normal schedule. Checks and direct deposit dates for essential payments depend on multiple factors for each beneficiary, and older Americans organize their budgets around the schedule.

While their crucial monthly payments receive an annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) to combat inflation and maintain beneficiaries’ adequate spending power, older Americans have raised concerns about the amounts of those payments. This comes as the Social Security trust fund is racing toward insolvency, and seniors face rising healthcare costs.

Here’s everything you need to know about the April 2026 Social Security payment schedule:

What is the Social Security payment schedule for April?

Social Security benefit payments are generally distributed to recipients on Wednesdays, with the specific date determined by the benefit type and the recipient’s birth date.

Social Security provides monthly payments to retired workers and dependents, to disabled workers and dependents, and to the family members of deceased workers, known as survivors.

Social Security retirement beneficiaries will receive their April 2026 payments on the following dates, according to the schedule:

    • Friday, April 3: Recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997

    • Wednesday, April 8: Recipients with birth dates between the 1st and 10th of the month

    • Wednesday, April 15: Recipients with birth dates between the 11th and 20th of the month

    • Wednesday, April 22: Recipients with birth dates between the 21st and 31st of the month

Recipients who collect both Social Security and SSI will receive their Social Security payment on the third of the month (April 3) and their SSI payment on the first of the month (April 1).

If you began receiving Social Security before May 1997, your payment is typically issued on the third day of the month, unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday.

When will I receive my SSI payment in April?

SSI recipients will receive their monthly benefits on Wednesday, April 1, according to the payment schedule.

SSI provides monthly benefits to adults and children who meet the following eligibility criteria, according to the SSA website:

    • Little or no resources, and

    • A disability, blindness, or are age 65 or older

The SSA considers a person’s income, disability benefits, and unemployment, and monthly benefits are typically available to individuals who don’t earn more than $2,073 per month from work.
